Mary Christina Pope was born in May 1829 to Robert and Sylvinia (Shaefer) Pope in Ohio. The family moved to Massac County, Illinois from Zanesville, OH in 1842. Mary Christina married Albion Robert Parker on March 21, 1852. The couple had 10 children.
The following is a transcription of the diary kept by Mary Christina (Pope) Parker from July 1895 until March 3, 1902.
A lot of events occurred in the lives of the Parker family in these 7 short years: marriage, death, new children. In particular, Mary and Albion's youngest song Thomas Irvin Parker met, married, and lost his wife Sarah (Sadie) Ewart during these years. Their daughter, Julia Ann, also had an eventual few years, as you will read.
While reading this diary, you will also be able to gain an insight into other families living in the western Massac County region of today's Joppa and Hillerman area. At the beginning of the diary, Paul Parker (Thomas and Josie (Berlingame) Parker's son) wrote down Thomas' recollections and provided some of his own. There are footnotes throughout the diary that notate information about a particular person/place mentioned in the diary.
